What a Maneuver 03: Verbally Raping Yokozuna

This week, we’re looking at Clash of the Champions XXXII, as well as Raw and Nitro for 1/29/96 and 2/5/96! We discuss more of Pillman’s loose cannon-ness, discuss Raw’s matches improving, Vince McMahon tells us about Jim Cornette using his voice to violate Yokozuna, and we somehow praise Tony Schiavone’s commentary.

I couldn’t agree with Joe’s assessment of Chris Benoit anymore. I listened to an interview with MVP last year and he said he was as close to Benoit as anyone could be (ditto Jericho, from his latest book) and the opinion of those two was essentially that the man had lost his mind due to years and years of untreated trauma and should be remembered for his in-ring work separately from his horrible final days.

Also, Joe may do the best, hands-down, Macho Man impression I’ve ever heard.

I think the best thing about the Hogan/Flair match is that, by my count, he hulks up no less than FOUR FUCKING TIMES. One time is even while he’s taking a figure four. I mean come on — there’s invincible babyface, and then there’s just ridiculous.

Also, if memory serves, Foley did indeed lose his ear in a match with Vader, but he credited 2 Cold Scorpio as the guy responsible for it. Scorpio had complained that the ring cable was too loose, so they tightened it up something fierce, and when Foley got tied up, he panicked and pulled his head out — ripping the ear off in the process.
